Battery Power for Home Use-Solar Charged?

So many choices. First, my home consumption is LOW. Highest monthly useage is 170 kW, so as you can see my consumption is quite low. Never tops $20/month.
Based on that, what batteries should I use to go OFF GRID? Deep cycle no doubt, but I see 150 amp hour batteries $100, and others for 2 and 3 times that much, also 150 amp hours.
Also am I better off stringing a couple of 6V 500 aH batteries together or a bunch of 12 volt 100 aH batteries. I am a little overwhelmed.

170 kW is a rate, I think you mean 170 kW-hour, which is a rate of
170 kW-hour x 1 day/24 hour x 1 month/30 day = 236 watts, and that is low.

No, get 12 volt sealed marine deep cycle batteries, as large as you can, as you will need a lot of them. The question is: how long do you need to keep power available during a long period with no sun, which can extend to many days, depending on where you live.

If you pick 30 hours for that number, then 236 watts x 30 hours = 7 kW-hours.
A 100 amp-hour battery will store about 1200 watt-hours or 1.2 kW-hours. So under the scenario above you would need 7/1.2 or 6 batteries. At $300 each, that is $1800

Now you need to pick a solar array size. How many hours a day sunlight, worse case, do you expect. Say 6 hours, that means the array has to put out 236×4 = 1000 watts. Probably about $2000.

So you need a 1000 watt panel, charge controller, a stack of batteries, and a high quality inverter, rated at your peak power usage, whatever that is, say 1000 watts.

Reference has a 1000 watt system, array, batteries, all the stuff you need for $4000. They use 8 6v 225amp-hr batteries hooked up as 24 volts 450 amp-hour or 11kW-hour storage
